1. High Performance Computing on Cloud Services®
3ds Max / CG Rendering Service |
This is a service that provides customers with photorealistic images via the FOCUS (Foundation for Computational Science) supercomputer.
The service can be exploited for various purposes. For example, it may be used to verify the design of a BIM architectural model including interior design, plan and design car and car parts, or review just about anything during its design stage. The service can also be used for presentations, publication and marketing. |
LuxRender is adopted as the rendering engine providing the photorealistic image.
LuxRender is freeware rendering software. There is an alternative technique applicable in the rendering engine known as the ray tracing technique. This technique simplifies the equation for light’s reflection to speed up the rendering process. Conversely, LuxRender uses the physical equation as it is and uses the wave length of light, not RGB, for colour.
Realistic images can be obtained by adjusting the material settings which is relatively easy. On the other hand, it might take few days to render a still image with a regular PC since the rendering speed is slow.

High-speed rendering via FOCUS |
LuxRender requires a great deal of time to run calculations, however its calculation speed can be improved by using several computers and running calculations in parallel.
In general, a computer cluster built to render computer-generated imagery (CGI) is called a "Render Farm". The standard parallel computation by LuxRender can speed up the calculations considerably; it can carry out calculations 20 to 30 times faster than a standalone PC performing the rendering. However, when the number of computers performing parallel computation goes a little over 50, the calculation speed decreases, hence you cannot expect the calculation to speed up (in the case of rendering a still image). Furthermore, more knowledge is required to create the kind of environment ideal for faster calculations.
FORUM8 has built the fast and easy-to-use render farm on the supercomputer
installed in FOCUS (Foundation for Computational Science). By remodeling
the parallel computation process of LuxRender, FORUM8 managed to increase
the rendering speed of computers in a render farm as much as 50 times the
rendering speed of a single node in the FOCUS and 100 times the rending
speed of a regular PC (The speed depends on the number of nodes performing
parallel calculation). Thanks to this development by FORUM8, rendering
that previously took about a week to complete can now be completed in about
2 hours.

in 1000 seconds when 100 nodes are performing
parallel computation via super computer in FOCUS |
|
As we still have room for improving the rendering speed by increasing the
number of computers in a computer cluster, we will consider building an
environment in which a supercomputer like "K" that is capable
of performing parallel computation even faster is incorporated in a computer
cluster.
