New C++ API

FORUM8 will release a new API that supports C++ to further expand the Virtual Reality Platform the software can offer to our valued customers. The new API is expected to bring many great advantages to our creative users.

  • C++ is one of the most popular programming language used for application development, and there are many open libraries and open source projects available in this language. Using these together with existing assets and applications can help reduce development costs. As these libraries and projects are updated on regular basis, it can be said that C++ is a promising programming language.
  • This language is familiar to many people and easy to learn because users can find abundant documentation about it. This is why many people chose to participate in projects using this language. C++ is also a favorite programming language for researchers in university labs engaged in research projects involving the use of virtual reality.
  • Characteristics of UC-win/Road C++ API:
  • Users can develop UC-win/Road plug-ins. Some end users can use it seamlessly as an integrated function. (Fig.1)
  • It is provided as a very useful object-oriented API.
  • Many development environments such as Microsoft Visual Studio, Code::Blocks, Eclipse can be used for C++ programming.
  • The old Delphi SDK style has been fully renewed and the configuration has become much more understandable.

Improvement of Simulation Rendering Performance

3D space rendering performance will be greatly enhanced in the UC-win/Road Ver.15.0. Especially for road and terrain data, we have been able to demonstrate that the frame rate is doubled compared to the previous version. We will continue add improvements to the software towards the day we release the new version, which will surely help make your real-time simulations and projects involving large VR environment much more powerful and effective than ever before.

Steering Wheel Force-Feedback Simulation

Simulation of force-feedback from steering wheels and game controllers with DirectInput has been improved. In particular, we made improvements to vehicle dynamics models appropriate for slow speed and parking operation to reproduce vehicle behavior much more accurately even when the vehicle is traveling at a normal speed.

nD Simulation

We released the 4D simulation function in the UC-win/Road Ver.14.1.The 4D simulation functions allows construction work flow to be visualized and controlled by setting behaviors of models linked with the 3D environment as the time changes. These visualizations can improve communication between managers, between contractors, and even to the public when giving presentations on the planned project, which in turn promote effective consensus building on the planned schedule and intuitive project feasibility assessment through the use of 3D models, and can even help avoid misunderstandings among stakeholders.

However, we often need to have effective communication and review our work progress from various perspectives in addition to making the most use of 3D models over time for a construction project to go well. For example, visualizing the cost in 5D is one way of getting a big picture of the whole project, but the smooth work flow of construction depends on a lot of conditions. We will improve the 4D simulation function in the UC-win/Road Ver.15.0 to achieve smooth visualization and simulation that considers and integrates together all conditions pertaining to a construction project such as safety assurance, weather, transportation of construction equipments and materials as well as their conditions, traffic condition, time, sunshine and lighting.

The followings are the main functions.

  • Definition of arbitrary quantity for review, CSV file import according to the work progress.
  • Ability to change and calculate variables that represent quantities using an equation that can handle spatial and temporal data.
  • Each variable can be exported to a table and graph, and the construction products can be checked as they change over time along the time axis. A variety of simulations using these general and multi-purpose functions will be possible.

Improvement of IFC File Import Function

As part of our continuous efforts to optimize our products for BIM and CIM (equivalent to BIM for construction and civil engineering), the IFC file import function will be updated to include the ability to read 3D model geometries and rebar information of a structure and place them automatically in a 3D environment. In addition, users can check the data of models any time by allowing the models to retain their respective IFC file. In this way, users can utilize and manage all project-related data with a single UC-win/Road data.

Moreover, we will enhance the software's ability to utilize attribute data in the future version.

In addition to the above-mentioned features, we will enhance the LandXML file support function and add to the software the ability to create drawings of an overall structure of buildings to further optimize our products for BIM and CIM, and also develop additional simulation functions that can support the research and development on HMI as our next mile stone on our product development roadmap.
