The 3rd Virtual Design World Cup
Virtual Design World Cup "3rd The Student VR & BIM Competition on Cloud"
-Competition for designing an advanced construction engineering-works on Cloud, making full use of BIM/CIM and VR ! -

Theme 2013
Sustainable Station Front in Global Metropolis

This is an international design competition for students to compete amongst each other in designing an innovative architecture, bridge and city design using BIM/CIM &VR technologies.
Every year students compete for the top prize which is given to an outstanding work outlining a predefined theme in the aspect of design, innovative idea, and creativity. They plan and design their work based on the theme and then run a simulation. Their final model will be presented to the judges in a form of a script for evaluation.
To assist students with the production of their work, we plan to carry out workshops and seminars. We will also support the students who will make use of software from now on. Also you can communicate and collect a lot of information without having to visit the local area by participating various workshop reviews through the Web and VR forum ( 3D cloud BBS ). The script of VR data created by FORUM8's software and a "Concept poster" (A1 size (lateral) in PDF format) are required for the final submission and the judgment is performed on the basis of "VR Cloud judgment". We would like you to use FORUM8's BIM software and VR technologies by all means and consider this competition as an opportunity to create your masterpiece. We encourage students from different departments majoring in different field of studies to make a team to work on their model together to demonstrate that BIM/CIM can be used in various discipline.

Guideline for applicants Theme 2013 : Sustainable Station Front in Global Metropolis
The concept of installing a new train station as part of the redevelopment project, whose plan is to reorganize the 20 hectare rail yard situated between Shinagawa station and Tamachi station and to relocate the Yamanote line from the west side of the yard to the east side (adjacent to the Shinkansen line), has been announced on air and put into consideration. No wonder the excitement for a new station whose name has not been given yet. The 2013 VDWC challenges students to devise a proposal of a new environmentally friendly urban space, which will most likely become one of Tokyo's significant "stopping off points" for people transferring from one transport mode to another, radiating from a new train station in Tokyo's harbor district. The VR data of the competition site includes the Shinagawa Intercity where FORUM8’s head office will be relocated this July, and the Shinagawa station front.

FORUM8 Co, Ltd. Tokyo Head Office was moved to Shinagawa INTERCITY as of July 16, 2013. The office relocation was a way of putting the head office and annex office together on one floor, 21st floor of Intercity Building A to be exact. The relocation was also means of expanding our seminar and show rooms. Office upgrade is another term we use to define this relocation because it coincided with our recent business expansion and we thank all our valuable users and partners for all your support.

Our UC-1 series products that we released back in 1981 have grown substantially. This is apparent in the "UC-1 Engineer’s Suite", which we released this year, with the reinforced cloud and CIM features. In addition, the demand for several of our FEM analysis software, most notably our Engineer's Studio®, has been pushed upwards by the tides of time in which the need for a great design & analysis software capable of designing and analyzing structural performance is increasing at unprecedented rate, because Engineer's Studio® does these things very well. The fact that many users are enjoying its benefits goes to show that Engineer's Studio® is indeed the answer. UC-win/Road, our state-of-the-art 3D Visual Interactive Simulation and Modeling software that we first released in 2000, is now being used not just in the civil engineering industry but also in driver research and automobile manufacturing industry just to new a few of its many applications.

We will be holding the "7th FORUM8 Design Festival 2013-3Days" in Shinagawa INTERCITY Hall where we will commemorate our head office relocation. Many exciting events held annually including the 12th 3D VR Simulation on Cloud, the 14th UC-win/Road Conference, and the 7th Design Conference are planned for this year's festival as well. We hope you attend this international conference by all means.

Virtual Design World Cup
"2nd Student BIM & VR Design Contest on Cloud"
-Compete on cloud for the most advanced architectural and civil engineering design using BIM and VR!-

Theme 2012
"Sustainable Design of Marine City"

This contest is an international design competition for students to compete amongst each other in designing innovative architecture, bridge and city design using BIM&VR.
Every year students compete for the top price which is given to an outstanding work outlining a predefined theme in the aspect of design, innovative idea, and creativity. They plan and design their work based on the theme and then run a simulation. Their final model will be presented to the judges in a form of a script and evaluated.
To assist with the production, we plan to carry out workshops and seminars. We will also support the students who will make use of software from now on. Also you can communicate and collect a lot of information without visiting local area by the exhibition of various workshop reviews through the Web and the utilization of VR forum ( 3D cloud BBS ) The script of VR data is required for the final submission and the judgment is performed on the basis of "VR Cloud judgment". We would like you to use forum8's BIM software and VR and think our company as a place which will make your technology and production developed.

Tasks Theme2012: "Sustainable Design of Marine City"
Sometimes you need to go against the tide to seek for a safer dwelling. Now is the perfect time. To overcome threats from tsunamis and other disasters, we set the task to explore the possibilities to live on the sea in a safe and secure sustainable "Marine City". Using Tokyo, Osaka (Kobe) and Fukuoka as the subject areas, design a proposal for a man-made island with recreational and residential functionalities in VR.
In a country like Japan, instead of opening up the forests and mountains, the best solution could be to develop onto the sea. Today, urban areas are more or less shrinking; therefore we tend to think that developing onto the sea is a bad thing. In this contest, students must challenge themselves to justify the development on the sea with the concept called sustainability. Keeping "biodiversity" as the keyword, aim to create new nature through artificial islands. Specifically, the issues to consider in the proposal are how to decide the location and the shape of the island, how to place roads, how to access the island, its self-sufficiency and the procurement of electricity, water and other infrastructure.

Target area for design
The areas shown in the VR model provided by FORUM8. The examples of main areas are the following.

Tokyo
Region: Area surrounded by Tokyo Big Site, Tokyo Disney Land, and Makuhari Messe
Tokyo Sky Tree and tall buildings around Tokyo station can be seen in the distance and Aqua Line can be seen in the south.

Kobe/Osaka
Region: Osaka Bay surrounded by Wada Misaki, Kobe airport, and Kurisaki Universal Studio)
Mt. Rokko and Awaji Island can be seen in the distance.

Hukuoka
Region: Area surrounded by Mt. Mouko, Kyushu University, vicinity of the Hakata station, Momochi, and Fukuoka Airport
Genkai island, Shiga island and Nokono island are dispersed in the distance.

Opening greeting of FORUM8 Design Festival 2011-3Days

Firstly, we would like to express our sincere condolences for all those who have been affected by the devastating earthquake occurred on March 11. We sincerely hope that this area will recover and be reconstructed as soon as possible.
FORUM8 will hold "Design Festival 2011-3Days". We have faced a number of difficulties from the earthquake disaster this year but we have gradually begun to see positive signs in such difficult conditions. Your continuing support and encouragement have been instrumental in that. In "Design Festival 2011", we plan to hold a variety of events like last year. On Day1, "10th 3D VR Simulation contest on cloud" will be held at Tokyo head office, and each award will be selected. From November 8 to 14, the works can be checked via VR-Cloud(TM) with Internet connection, and the public voting will be conducted.
"VR Conference"(12th UC-win/Road Conference, 5th International VR Symposium) will be held on Day2 and "Design Conference" will be held on Day3 at Shinagawa front building.
We have invited many lecturers from home and abroad. In addition, we believe that the members of World16 will provide the presentation on the latest VR research in the International VR Symposium. We are also planning a variety of exciting and fulfilling contents including our new product UC-win/Road Ver.6, VR-Cloud(TM) Ver.2 to be released soon, Analysis support services, 3D engineering services, high-performance computing
on cloud services, 6K cluster digital signage system, the latest driving simulator, and the book launch/networking party. We look forward to making this exciting event a reality and hope that you too are eager to be involved.

ESSENCE AWARD
"STRIDING AHEAD! Modeling Unpredictable Pedestrian Road Crossing Behavior"
Abley Transportation Consultants Limited(New Zealand)
Iiam Road is located in a residential area of Christchurch and provides access to the University of Canterbury. Due to its close proximity large numbers of pedestrians walk along and cross Iiam Road, often informally taking the quickest routes. Safety and efficiency concerns have lead to the need for a redevelopment of Ilam Road. In order to represent the nature of university students who tend to cross the road at random locations rather than using formalized crossings the UC-win/Road Micro simulation player plugin was used in conjunction with an S-Paramics model and the S- Paramics plugin.

DEVELOPMENT AWARD
"A publicity drive simulator for EV and charging system in SmartGrid"
SK Energy Co., Ltd.(Korea)
The public facility is constructed in Jeju island, Korea, where the large-sized experiment of SmartGrid is conducted. SmartGrid, which produces the battery for electronic vehicles made use of the VR system in UC-win/Road to develop an experience drive simulator. This simulator searches the area for battery charging locations while driving in the EV vehicle environment.

"Proposal of Reproducing Environmentally-friendly Waterland City Hino"
Hosei University
AVI-DivX AVI [85,244KB 1:30] YouTube
In Hino City, which was once one of the largest farm areas in Tokyo, a water channel network for irrigation was developed in the Tama River and Asakawa area. The city of Hino, in response to the rapid increase in population from 1960's actively redeveloped land and now 50% of the city is designated as redeveloped. In these areas many of the water channels were lost. Total length of the canal was 218km, 177km in 1977, and it is now said that only 130km remain. In 1995, the area was designated as "Town of Water" by then Ministry of Land, however, the rural landscape is certainly gone, the number of channels has decreased. Therefore we are proposing a new type of land redevelopment utilizing the water-rich environment around the channels of Hino City.

GRAND PRIX
"Simulated driving diagnosis system using CG simulation"
National Agency for Automotive Safety & Victims' Aid
The most distinguishing feature of driving competence diagnosis system "NASVA NET" is that it's a "simulated driving diagnosis system using CG simulation", which uses VR simulation carried out over the internet. This covers separate diagnoses of grades for safe eco-driving, defensive safe driving, hasty driving and considerate driving. The movement of cars driving on this simulator is recorded and analysed to give advice about safe driving.
EXCELLENCE AWARD
"Sakai City Oshoji LRT Project VR data"
Osaka University, Graduate School of Engineering, Division of Sustainable Energy and Environmental Engineering
This VR was created in order to consider and build consensus for a planned LRT improvement project in Sakai City. The proposed subject area for the installation includes an area of about 1.6km from Sakai station on the Nankai Electric Railway Main Line to Sakai-higashi station on the Koya Line. Besides the present situation, it can depict plans for the layout approaching the LRT tracks, transit mall plans, roadside landscape plans, etc. and the future of central Sakai city can be considered from the perspective of traffic and landscape.
IDEA AWARD
"Erection of construction girders for underground passageway construction in train stations."
Noda Engineering Co., Ltd.
We erect temporary construction girders for the construction of elevators and underground passageways just under a railway at a barrier-free train station. The installation work will be performed in a narrow space between platforms and crane operation is impossible, therefore a new erection method is being investigated and the details are being drawn up in VR.
ESSENCE AWARD
"VR utilization case in educational curriculum"
Daido Institute of Technology, Department of Civil Engineering and Environmental Design
In this research, the creation of a street landscape pattern and the proposal of street landscape evaluation method based on a marketing approach are being performed by VR. As VR that's been used for consistent training in urban development since 2007, practical training with UC-win/Road has been adopted with the aim of training technicians that can design and do design proposals from various perspectives.
OVERSEA'S AWARD

"Ishikawa-cho Junction Simulation"
Kanagawa Construction Bureau, Metropolitan Expressway Company Limited
The exit of the Metropolitan bay-coast express way area was newly completed at the Ishikawa-cho junction of the Metropolitan expressway, Yokohane line, on Wednesday, November 21.
Direct access will make it much more convenient. It changed from a mere coastal line to well-known tourist spots in Yokohama such as Chinatown, Yamashita park, and Kannai district where main government agencies (Yokohama city hall, Kanagawa prefectural office) are clustered. UC-win/Road shows in great detail, the activities of possible access routes. This VR simulation model has been used to announce and explain during their meeting, using displays of exit routes, signs and videos on the homepage.
This project was open to the public at 15:00 on the day of the contest. As compared to the actual scene on site, the validation results have been proven to be highly accurate.

[ Simulation carried out at the Daishi junction and ventilation place ]
Metropolitan expressway Company Limited, Kanagawa bureau

The line traversing Kawasaki City (the first) is planned to strengthen the communication with the city and the center of Tokyo and the other central cities which are the central business cities in the metropolitan region, and is under construction now by Metropolitan Expressway Co.,Ltd. Among that, the Daishi junction has become the complicated form where the high level roads and the semi- underground roads congest. Depending, in order to deepen the commonness recognition of everyone of the local residents who take part in this construction and the persons concerned with the business, we created a 3DVR which begins the car simulation. In addition, Daishi ventilation place built in a loop, makes simulation to be aimed for the common property of the image with the applying companies when they order technical suggestions constructions. It is used in the construction summary presentation, and serves to connect with the better technology suggestions by securing the situation of the construction place.

Before the city planning road development of Machida city, we created the VR data and the AVI animation on the basis of the VR data as a document for explanation to the local residents. Concerning the local products in the surrounding of the planned bridges, we created the 3 dimensional models on the basis of local reports. About the sunlight study which uses the data which are completed, we did the study using the UC-win/Road visual option-shadow option and captured the animation. We created the document for editing the AVI on the basis of the animation. Using the functions such as the visual option in addition to the practical use as the ordinary VR data which utilizes the traffic flow expressions, it became a document for more effective presentation.

[ The Simulation of Ecological Restoration of Yunnan Province Erhai Lakeside Area ]
China Shanghai Institute of Waterways

Erhai Lake is located to the Yunnan Province (similar to the Japanese Lake Biwa,), water contamination gets worse by influx such as decrease and life draining of water level. For that, as a business model, they made ecological restoration construction for of the environment and the ecological protection. 3DVR was used in the summary of this construction to explain the effect. This data reproduced the terrain of this area to real as a contour line. From various points of view, we made the simulation of the procedure of the development, the texture of the models is original, the 3D trees and the fake light are fine. In addition, it expressed the effect due to environmental improvement, including the circumstances like fishes swimming. In conclusion, for making the AVI, music is inserted, added also the explanation with the sound. As a public information, we can use an AVI animation in future.

[Metropolitan underground infrastructure model]
NISSEI EBLO INC.
Representation with several points of view of structures of an underground space (subway, underground facilities). Data used for explanation to the citizens.

Content :
Creation of a metropolitan underground of the vicinity of a subway station, including water supply and sewage pipes, gas pipes, and a complex representation of the subway.
Representation of the different soil layers with gradation plans and a depth gauge. The use of the fog in the underground increase the reality of the model.
[Jouganji river scenery simulation]
Disaster Prevention Establishment for Agricultural Lands along Jouganji River in Hokuriku Agri-political Office
Content :
Yokoe headworks on Jouganji river is the main subject of these data.
Used as a picture of environmental developments, the model of the Yokoe headworks and the bridge on the link canal of the left bank of the river are presented to facilitate the comprehension of the concerned inhabitants.
These data are used for a design and color study of the different type of works of the plan (gate chamber, guard gate hangar, bassin gate chamber, fish ladder...). Furthermore, a realistic simulation of the flow of the river in its normal and flood state is made possible.
[New construction method : quick SLIT construction method simulation model]
TODA CORPORATION
Content :
In urban reformation projects, the examples of plan for bycicle/car parkings, two-level roads are multiplying. However, in the traditional method, after the construction of the temporary retaining wall, lining planks are layed before starting the underground construction. Then increasing the length of negative effect on the suroundings, a significant amount of time is use for the removing of these planks and the restoration of the space they occupied.
In this new method, instead of temporary planks, precast concrete is used. Which allows to rebuild the surface during the main underground works. The effect on the vicinity and the duration of the main construction can be reduced. Where a lot of temporary materials are traditionnaly used for retaining walls, rationalization and cost reduction is possible by the use of final structures.
[Simulation of the process of a bridge replacement]
Metropolitan Expressway Co., Ltd. / CENTRAL CONSULTANT INC.
Content :
Representation of the different steps of construction of junction road to a metropolitan highway. The 11 steps process with bridges and rivers construction is modelized. These data plot the mutual understanding of the applicant, executionner and designer and will be used for explanations to the citizens.
With this 3D modelization, data such as excavations, flow cross-sections and steel-pipe piles which are unintelligible in 2 dimensions can be grasped without misunderstanding.
These data have been made so that the various alignments of roads and rivers in each step can be confirmed. Furthermore instead of using 11 separate files, the model of every step is made at different coordinates in the same file which reduces read times. Moving from one step to another is done via camera positioning, the use of same viewpoints on every step greatly improve the understanding of the whole process.
[Simulation of Tokyo station Shinkansen guidance boards and information diffusion]
East Japan Railway Company
Content :
Data made for a public presentation of a renewal project of Tokyo station.
A subject-of-research exhibition as a target, a grasping image of the overall work and the new information boards are modelized.
In the station, the space between the Shinkansen ticket barriers and the train platform is modelized. With the use of flight paths, the interior of the building is seen as we would walk in the station.
From a visitor point of view, a study was carried out in order to know what information is necessary and usable to reach the train by oneself.
[Traffic simulation at peak hours of a shopping mall]
LOC DEVELOPMENT CO.,LTD.
Simulation of the increase in traffic demand for the visitors to a newly built commercial center.
Content :
Simulation of the influence of the construction of a commercial center on its environing traffic. Data created for a simluation based presentation for the prefectural inquiry commission.
The possible outbreak of traffic congestion at the front intersection was on concern and several cases were simulated for both situations : with and without the commercial center.
The result of the study based on traffic volumes and signalization concluded to a congestion of the front intersection. After the real opening of the center, results and real traffic were concordant.

The first local produce placed as landmark is the Botchan stadium, some building are also placed around the intersection.
In addition of being used for explanation purposes for the citizens, these data will be used for the presentation new driving simulation system
Overseas work (Three)
[China : Shanghai Dalu line waterway maintenance, one time construction work (Lingang new district)]
Shangai Nepoch Information Co., Ltd.
Work details :
Shangai Dalu line (Lingang new district) is an important 50km long waterway in the country which links Yangshan harbor district and the next province with a heavy transporter traffic.
Reaching an investment of 2.6 billion of Yuans (37.0 billion of Yens) the accomplishment of this project requires business reports to the relevant governemental organizations and bodies.
Since this business must take in consideration the effects on the scenery, 3D computer graphics were used to modelize the 2D slides used up to now.
Work highlights :
- 9 different bridges over the waterway.
- Beautiful curves of the gravity type river dikes.
- Water amenity facilities on both sides of the canal.
- Modelization of the traditional slides in 3D graphics and establishment of service areas with an additional budget.
- Using road models, waterways and river dikes show a pretty look.
[China : Tientsin Haihe bridges project - Cifeng bridge design study]
CRISEN TECHNOLOGY CO., LTD.
Content :
Tientsin is a city of the North-East part of the plain of North China, facing the sea and Bohai at the East side of the bay. It is the bigest open shore of the North China and the economical center of Huanbohai area.
Haihe is the origin and the image of Tientsin and will welcome the 2008 Olympic Games. The restructuring project of Haihe is therefore and important part of the development strategy of Tientsin.
The Cifeng bridge is at the heart of the development of Haihe and at the center of the financial and business district of Tientsin. Next to Tientsin station and East hand of the Cifeng road of Heping district and Haihe West road, it links the Ligonglou interchange of Hedong district at the East side. Since one road extends over Heping and Hedong districts, it becomes the major link between the South-East part of the city and the Binhai internatinal airport.
Up to now, future developments for the Cifeng bridge have always been delayed. Because its capacity is limited with the 10m wide structure and one way two lanes traffic, peak hours see outbreak of chaotic congestions. Even the separation of the up and downstream circulation in two bridges (Daguangmin for the downstream) cannot restrain the traffic disorder.
The purposes of the project are as follow :
- Bridge design plan
Situation, traffic and especialy congestion situation.
- Passing method plan
